Grant Description

Grants of $75,000 per year to researchers affiliated with a USA nonprofit institution for research studies related to respiratory diseases. Funding is intended for projects that help detect, prevent, and treat lung disease. The goal of the grant program is to assist promising independent investigators who are leveraging their existing body of work to conduct basic science, behavioral, clinical, or translational research for lung health. Successful applicants are investigators with evidence of prior excellence and productivity in the early stages of their careers.

Eligibility:

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

The applicant must hold a doctoral degree and have a faculty appointment or equivalent with demonstrated institutional commitment (salary support, research space as evidenced by a Department Chair or equivalent letter) in a recognized U.S. academic or other nonprofit research institution. The applicant's publication record should reflect significant scientific contributions. The applicant must have held a K or R level grant in the three years prior to the application.

Individuals who have been PI on two or more large federal research grants (even those with multiple PIs) in their career are not eligible to apply (examples of large federal grants are R01, U01, P01, and VA Merit). Note that being identified as a Co-Investigator does not count toward this restriction.

The following requirements apply to all awards:
- Candidates must be U.S. citizens or foreign nationals holding one of the following visa immigration statuses: permanent resident (Green Card), exchange visitor (J-1), a temporary worker in a specialty occupation (H-1B), Canadian or Mexican citizen engaging in professional activities (TN), Australians in Specialty Occupation (E-3 visa), a temporary worker with extraordinary abilities in the sciences (O-1)
- Candidates must be employed by a U.S. not-for-profit institution.

Timeline:
- August 6, 2022: New award cycles announced; applications available through proposalCENTRAL
- December 15, 2022, 11:59 PM ET: All applications are due through proposalCENTRAL
- February-April 2023: Administrative review and scientific peer review
- June 2023: Outcome notifications emailed to all applicants
- July 1, 2023: Research term begins

Applicants are limited to submitting only one application per annual cycle. It is recommended that applicants submit projects to the appropriate Institutional Animal Care and Use of Committee (IACUC) and human subjects Institutional Review Board (IRB) at the time of application or before. Copies of the approvals must be provided to the American Lung Association prior to the start of an award.

Term of Contract:

Up to two years. The second year of support is based on demonstrating satisfactory progress, as well as the availability of funding from both organizations.
