Grants to USA nonprofit organizations and individuals for initiatives to benefit Japanese American communities. Funding is intended for projects in a wide range of areas, including the humanities, social sciences, traditional arts, and policy and planning. Proposals that strengthen the ties between UCLA faculty, students, and staff, and the Japanese American community will receive particular consideration.
The George and Sakaye Aratani “Community Advancement Research Endowment,” or Aratani C.A.R.E., Awards are designed to promote projects that will benefit and advance Japanese American communities. Awards can pertain to any geographic area or region as long as the project benefits Japanese American and Nikkei communities in the United States.
Funds may be used for direct project costs such as project materials, (limited) domestic mileage, printing and photocopying, informational community forums, data collection, database development, data management, and transcription costs.
Proposals are sought that will have a positive impact on and outcome for the Japanese American community, and that will involve members of the UCLA community who are supportive of JA culture and culture building. This can include events, panels, and symposia on the UCLA campus.
Awards will be considered in a wide range of areas, including most of the traditional arts, social sciences, humanities, and planning/policy areas. Possible application topics could entail educational workshops or conferences on or off the UCLA campus but again must demonstrably heighten JA community and UCLA campus ties; data collection on social issues/social needs; forums to promote creative writing; outreach to marginalized sectors of the community; innovative multi-disciplinary collaborations; archives building and organization; digitization of significant collections; publication of brochures or handbooks; projects related to Japanese newcomers; JA women; LGBT issues; leadership and youth development initiatives; etc.
Estimated Size of Grant:
Projects should be completed within a year or less.
