Grant Description

Opportunity for USA and Canada K-12 student teams to participate in a STEM competition. The competition is intended to encourage students to focus on team-based learning, problem-solving, critical thinking, and communication skills. The competition encourages students to combine their imaginations with the tools of science to create and explore a vision of a future technology.

Participants are provided the opportunity to better understand the core disciplinary ideas in science, and engage in the scientific and engineering practices espoused in the Next Generation Science Standards, as they wrestle with solving real-world, authentic problems presented via the ExploraVision competition. A teacher will sponsor and lead his/her students as they work in groups of 2 – 4 to simulate real research and development. A teacher will guide his or her students as they pick a current technology, research it, envision what it might look like in 10 or more years, and describe the development steps, pros & cons, and obstacles.

Each category will be judged separately, based on the abilities of students in those grades.  ExploraVision has four categories:

  • Primary Level (Grades K – 3)
  • Upper Elementary Level (Grades 4 – 6)
  • Middle Level (Grades 7 – 9)
  • High School Level (Grades 10 – 12)

Eligibility:

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

ExploraVision is designed for K – 12 students of all interest, skill and ability levels. The competition is open to students enrolled in public, private or home school in the United States and Canada.

All projects must meet the following requirements:
- All entrants must be United States or Canadian citizens and living within the United States, U.S. Territories or Canada and enrolled full-time in a public, private or home school
- Students must be no older than 21 years of age
- National Science Teachers Association employees, NSTA board members, ExploraVision judges and their respective families are not eligible to enter the competition
- Any project that has won at ExploraVision's regional and/or national levels may not be re-submitted in future years
- Any project previously awarded a prize in another competition may not be submitted
- Any student who was selected as a regional or national finalist in ExploraVision can only compete in subsequent years with a new team — i.e., with students who have not previously been selected as ExploraVision regional or national finalists
- Students enter as a team of 2-4 students with a teacher/coach and optional mentor (no individual entries)

General Requirements:

Students:
- Must be full-time K-12 students
- Must be currently enrolled in and attending a public, private, or homeschool in the U.S. or Canada
- Must not be older than 21

Teachers/Coaches:
- Are required for each team
- Must teach at a school attended by at least one of the team members
- Cannot be a parent/guardian of a team member
- May enter an unlimited number of teams
- Should guide the students but not perform work on the project

Mentors:
- Are optional
- Can be an individual that represents an organization or business or be a parent/guardian of a team member
- Should serve as a resource for the team but not perform work on the project

- Regional Winners Announced: March 20, 2023
- National Winners Announced: May 5, 2023
- ExploraVision Awards Weekend: June 7 - June 9, 2023 in Washington, D.C.

Students:
- Up to $240,000* in savings bonds: $10,000* savings bond for each first-place team member and $5,000* savings bond for each second-place team member
- A trip to Washington, DC in June for ExploraVision Awards Weekend for each national winning student and one parent/ legal guardian.
- A Chromebook for each regional winning student.
- A virtual awards ceremony for each regional winning team where they will receive a winner’s banner, plaque and other gifts.
- A STEM-related prize for all students on 500 Honorable Mention winning teams.
- A certificate of participation and an entry gift for every student who submits a complete project.

Schools:
- A technology/science-related gift for each of the schools of the regional winning teams
- National press coverage and national recognition
- An awards ceremony for each regional winning team at their school where they will receive a winner’s banner, plaque, and other gifts

Teachers/Coaches/Mentors:
- A trip to Washington, DC in June for ExploraVision Awards Weekend for the teacher/coach of each national winning team.
- A one-year NSTA membership for teachers/coaches of the national winning teams.
- A certificate of participation and an entry gift for each coach and mentor of every team that submits a completed project.
- A Chromebook for the teacher/coach of each regional winning team.
- A unique gift for the mentor of each regional winning team.
- A trip to an NSTA conference for ExploraVision Ambassadors
